  • Ask John: Why Does Anime Feel Different Than American Cartoons?

Question: Anime is so addictive. Been watching anime since I was 17 in Australia here, first being Tetsuwan Atom, then Sailor Moon in 95, then Hokuto no Ken, which I wished never ended. Loved watching Kenshiro’s wandering, his battles & all the characters, as with Dragon Ball had the same feeling with me too. Western cartoons have nothing of the feeling that anime delivers. Would this be one the reasons why anime is so loved in the West? Answer: Anime is frequently most immediately identifiable by its distinctive visual design. But visual design alone doesn’t explain why…

The Internets seem abuzz with post-TCAF 2013 afterglow. Most reports, particularly verbal ones after the show, have been overwhelmingly positive. I won't disagree -- it's an amazing show. It's one of the best run, best organized, and best publicized "indy" comic shows I've had the honor of exhibiting at for 3 years now. Reports have been popping up recently, questioning if TCAF's peak year was last year. Well, I wasn't there in 2012, so I can't compare -- but here are my two cents on my experience this year: Overall costs Pre-show planning Cost analysis Value Continue reading "TCAF 2013…

Kuri Ippei (whose real name is Toyoharu Yoshida) is a manga artist most well known for his co-creation of the 70s hit anime series Gatchaman (Battle Of The Planets). Together with his brothers Tatsuo and Kenji Yoshida, they founded the anime studio Tatsunoko. This book is a collection of his illustration works created for the numerous anime series by Studio Tatsunoko, including Speed Racer (see image below), Gatchaman, Casshan and many more. Gatchaman is the only Tatsunoko anime I am more familiar with, though it was created quite a while before my time. It seems a Japanese live-action film…

This book collects the complete production storyboards for Mamoru Hosoda’s anime film Wolf Children (Ookami Kodomo No Ame To Yuki). Read also the amazing art book for the film here. Storyboards are supporting materials use to aid the completion of a film and are not always drawn/polished to high detail/quality, but what a happy bonus when it is ! This is certainly true of all the storyboards drawn by Miyazaki-san. (above & below) The children’s recurring transformation from human to wolf and back allows for one many comedic opportunities, but as the film progresses it takes on…

The Cimitero Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery) in Milan was one of the last places I visited during my Italy trip. Rome is renowned for its beautiful sculptures and I was sure the cemetery would be a treasure trove of stone & marble art work, just like Paris’s Montparnasse Cemetery. The light was amazing that day with clear, beautiful blue skies, although from the pictures it’s hard to tell how frigidly cold the whole place was, as it was almost completely devoid of human activity. The perfect escape from the chaotic streets of Milan. (above) I was quite transfixed by the…

  • Ohikkoshi – Hiroaki Samura does comedy in a modern setting

    dm00
    5 May 2013 | 4:10 pm
by dm00 Ohikkoshi is an anthology of short stories from Blade of the Immortal‘s Hiroaki Samura. Blade of the Immortal has always looked too violent for me, so I’ve never looked into it — though I can appreciate the artistic talent of the creator. Ohikkoshi, published by Dark Horse, is a collection of three comic short stories set in the contemporary world.  The title story is about a collection of college-age ne’er do-wells drinking, forming bands, encountering Italian assassins, and missing connections when it comes to love. Ohikkoshi’s concerts come…

by dm00 A recent Jason Thompson column about Yumekui Kenbun — Nightmare Inspector sent me off to the library. This is a delightful mild-horror series. The art is very nice (with some wonderful dream concepts). In the first three volumes, at least, I’d say the writing is stronger than that of xxxHoLic, in a similar genre. xxxHoLic makes better use of drifting smoke and textiles, Yumekui Kenbun is a little better at the fantastic, I think. Hiroku is a baku — a dream-eater. He hangs out in the Silver Star Tea Shop (which basically destroys the shop’s business, as…

Between its production values and charm, it’s no wonder so many people rated the series so highly.  I’m sure it’s been talked to death. But I want to express my appreciation for one thing the series does…

How I’ve watch anime  has changed by necessity, with my laptop currently on the road to brickdom and utilizing streaming to the fullest extent on my Kindle Fire. That being said, there’s been plenty of stuff that’s piqued my interest, but it’s been hard to write more substantially…

Not entirely anime related but I know the otaku community is very much a part of the fight for Internet rights.  From 4Chan to Reddit to Anonymous & other venues, since the early 2000s, the anime/gamer/otaku community created the foundations of the internet, it's memes and it's overall direction. We have been the ones who taught and/or inspired the computer illiterate masses to "get" the internet and for the past decade, made the internet the place it is today where you can anonymously or publicly have your voice heard, your ideas shared and engage in a community of your peers.

Ledo ( ´Д`)….. I was almost sad how predictable things turned out to be in this episode, with the revelation the whalesquids are Hideauze and that the locals worship them as sacred and that Ledo would embark on the route of hamartia to do what he thinks is the “right” thing to do; to kill them all no matter the cost. Comparisons with a memorable quote from Avatar have been duly noted as well. The second half of the episode was quite nerve-wracking too. I was almost expecting casualties to happen but luckily, nothing of the sort materialized. And now, we’re on to…

She broke there alright. So uh… yeah, finally we’re in the Shironeko arc but holy shit what this painful to watch or what? Where do I even start? The part where they reinforced Kyousuke’s massive siscon boner for Kirino for half the episode? Or the part where Kirino and Manami both gently urge him to go out with Kuroneko? Or is it the part where Kyousuke totally loses his mind after accepting the confession and starts asking people he just knew about when to grope someone’s boobs? This episode was a total trainwreck through and through. Even if Kuroneko went totally…

  • Impressions: Attack on Titan Episodes 1-7

    25 May 2013 | 4:14 am
In a shocking twist, I'm writing articles for Ani-Gamers again! Remember when I used to do that? Anyway, I'm here to talk about a show that everybody else has been talking about for weeks. That's right, it's this season's biggest conversation topic: Attack on Titan. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyoujin) is based on a manga published in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, but you wouldn't know it from the tone and setting. That's because Titan is a dark, depressing medieval fantasy, the sort of thing that might confuse fans expecting the action-packed exuberance of Weekly Shonen Jump. But…

    17 May 2013 | 6:00 am
Episode 2: Ink: After an episode almost entirely devoted to establishing atmosphere and introducing the main character, Aku no Hana starts to build its momentum. This episode covers much more material than the first, exposing Kasuga’s inner conflict and compounding it by revealing just how unsettling Nakamura’s smile can be. Consequently, there’s a noticeable effect on the depth of Kasuga’s interactions with friends and family, but this does not detract from the focus on his introspective moments that truly distinguish this anime. All of this offers a reprieve from the…

In a press release today, Baltimore anime convention Otakon announced that world-renowned composer Yoko Kanno will debut her new performance, "PIANO ME" at Otakon 2013, held August 9-11, 2013 in the Baltimore Convention Center. Kanno is probably most famous for composing the music to Sunrise and Shinichiro Watanabe's classic anime series Cowboy Bebop, but her anime work has spanned genres and generations (including such series as Macross Frontier, Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex, Kids on the Slope, and Wolf's Rain), easily making her the most well known name in anime music. 10 May 2013 | 1:00 pm
Oishinbo was a title that came up during the Drinkin’ Buddies interview with Ninja Consultants Erin and Noah, and I have to say I am ever grateful that it did. As cautious as I am about taking facts from illustrated fiction, some of what I know about sake (having casually and randomly wagered consumption on labels alone) coincides with content in the manga. So at the very least, the Sake volume provides a good springboard for further investigation into and experimentation with the exotic realm of Japanese alcoholic beverages. Written by Tetsu Kariya and with art by Akira Hanasaki,…

It’s kind of amazing how you look at something differently after watching it the second time. I spent yesterday and a bit of today re-watching the first season of Chihayafuru (and unbeknownst to me so was chungky). For those of you who don’t know it, Chihayafuru is a manga/anime about a bunch of high-school kids playing karuta. Karuta’s basically a game based around the hyakunin isshu, a collection of 100 poems by 100 poets. Chihayafuru really changed for me when I re-watched it; most probably because my understanding of karuta was a lot better, but now that I knew some things were…

    Scott Spaziani
    4 May 2013 | 10:25 am
Kyoto Animation is known for creating the most popular anime among the serious, hard core Otaku in Japan. It’s hard to believe that they haven’t attempted to create an original work before Tamako Market. They’re success has come from taking already popular work among those handful of hardcore fans and applying their animation ability to it. Tamako Market represents their attempt to apply what they learned from their adaptive works and try to create something without the need of outside licenses. Tamako Market is about Tamako Kitashirakawa the daughter of a Mochi seller at a…

Japan being an island nation with a long and rich fishing tradition I’m surprised that fishing hasn’t snuck into more Japanese animation. At least, few anime that have made it over to the United States. Looking at the synopsis, a show focused around fishing didn’t sounds appealing but what I got was less a show about someone fishing but a science fiction adventure with a sweet message of friendship. The colors in Tsuritama are incredibly vibrant, a fantastic looking show which captures the whimsical nature of Haru, an alien who arrives on Enoshima and befriends the…

Space is awesome. Statement of fact.  Well, yes and no. Moretsu Pirates suffers from the industry’s attempts to chase after a duality, create the perfect anime that will…

There are so many barriers to entry in Chihayafuru that if it wasn’t freely available streaming I doubt that I, and many others who have been singing its praises, would have even attempted to touch it. It’s a sports anime that is about a card game rooted in ancient Japanese poetry, and that doesn’t sound like it would have much appeal outside a small number of specialized hobbyists. However, Chihayafuru is an anime that transcends it’s subject matter, and even it’s genre, to become something truly spectacular. The way Chihayafuru is constructed feels like the…

  • A Very Fujoshi Thanksgiving in May

    16 May 2013 | 1:11 pm
Hey, we’re halfway there, right? Also, pretend those hands are those of your favorite ship! While watching the NBA on TNT recently, sportscaster Ernie Johnson talked about doing a big hashtag trend on Twitter called “#thanksgivinginmay” on Thursday, May 16, 2013.  So, I just wanted to say “KYAAA!”…I mean “Happy Thanksgiving” to the wonderful fujoshi I’ve met and spoken to over the past couple of years. Especially a special one in particular. Gin x Shin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve written about the fujoshi in the past and I still stand by my…
  • Finding Humor in the Darkness (Attack on Titan)

    8 May 2013 | 6:36 pm
To quote a Tumblr user on the rise of Attack on Titan to the mainstream anime/manga community, how did something so horrifying end up being so hilarious? As many of you may know, Attack on Titan has become a beloved juggernaut to fans all over the world and some creative folks have responded with great enthusiasm. Social networking feeds became bombarded with wacky pictures and funny video parodies featuring the Titans and the Scouting Legion. One has to wonder if humor truly comes from seeing misery. Attack on Titan was supposed to be a tragic yet heroic story about a group of kids trying to…
  • Down in the Dumps of Happiness

    3 May 2013 | 3:16 pm
If there’s one mantra that’s always told to everyone, it’s that money can’t buy happiness. There is some truth to all of this. An interesting article I read at World of Psychology focused on garbage pickers who are very optimistic about life despite their living standards. Folks who go around collecting trash don’t seem to worry too much about food or money. They have good relationships and believe that the future will be bright for them. Reading this article made me think about poor characters like Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket), Hayate Ayasaki (Hayate the Combat…
  • The Greatest Contract in the World

    30 Apr 2013 | 7:05 am
For those who wonder about fandom unlocking the power of creativity in others, this should be a shining example of that power. While attending the 2013 Sakura Matsuri in Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I happened to run into a Sayaka Miki (of Puella Magi Madoka Magica fame) cosplayer and took her photo. After taking her photo, she gave me this form - which I thought was some permission letter. But it turned out to be something I always wanted. A chance to be a Magical Girl and bring peace to the universe while being a emotionless husk! Rights, responsibilities, terms of agreement, applicant…

  • Go for Broke: Bakuman

    Kuuki
    20 May 2013 | 9:00 pm
To follow the words they kept on using in the anime/manga, if I had to describe Bakuman I’d say it’s an unorthodox battle anime. This anime, adapted from a Jump manga, follows the story of two young men as they try to became popular mangaka, and deal with the things a normal boy deals with. Like love. Mostly love. Also, did I mention this anime was about love? I admit I was a bit mean in my summary but it really puts a lot of emphasis on love. So much that I’d be tempted to classify it as Josei if it wasn’t published in Jump. As you may have guessed from how I speak…

Huh. I don’t seem to have a bunch of reading material for this week’s RRM. I think I’m officially slacking off here. Or maybe it’s the other way around?!? MEH! Anyways, good morning all. Before you do whatever you do for the day, have some links for breakfast! Manga as Pop Culture Subtext, and taking a bit more of a look into Thomas LaMarre’s The Anime Machine.  Let’s just say Jun Maeda’s gotten himself involved in works that has had some pretty good music composers composing music! Marina talks about Gargantia and pretty much everything in between…
  • Remembering Love: Revisiting FLCL!

    Justin
    19 May 2013 | 2:10 pm
So ok, the shows I talked about for Remember Love have been pretty interesting, but I should point out that those shows happened to air during my childhood. You know, during the time where cartoons were considered to be for kids? That basically means script changes, censors, edits, the works — all to protect my sanity…apparently. I mean sure the fighting could be pretty violent, but let’s just say both of the works I already talked about appealed to a certain audience. But then I soon discovered Adult Swim. And then subsequently discovered FLCL. You see, some time during my…
